Why Made-to-Order Furniture Costs What It Does

Two sofa sets can look identical in a photograph and differ by three times in price. Buyers reasonably suspect a markup. Usually what they are looking at is a different object entirely. Here is where the money actually goes.

Timber, and the part nobody sees

Solid Sheesham is the most expensive input and the most commonly substituted. A large bed or a seven-seater sofa frame consumes a serious volume of hardwood, and Sheesham’s price per cubic foot has climbed steadily for years.

Seasoning is the hidden cost. Kiln-drying timber to 8 to 12 percent moisture ties up capital and weeks of time before a single cut is made. A workshop that skips it saves that money and passes the failure to you two winters later, when a joint opens.

Carving hours

This is the largest labour line in a classical piece. A deeply carved headboard is around three weeks of one skilled carver’s time. A classical sofa set with carved show-wood on every frame can run to a month and a half. Those hours belong to someone who trained for a decade, and they cannot be compressed.

A CNC router reproduces the pattern in an hour. That is the entire price gap, and it is visible in the cuts: uniform walls, a small radius at every internal corner, and every repeat identical.

Joinery

Mortise-and-tenon joints are cut, fitted and glued individually. Cam locks and screw fittings are drilled in seconds. The first can be opened, cleaned and re-glued in twenty years; the second cannot be repaired at all once the panel has crumbled around it.

Upholstery, where it applies

• Frame — seasoned hardwood versus stapled softwood
• Suspension — webbing or serpentine springs versus a plywood deck
• Foam — high-resilience 32 to 40 density versus low-density foam that flattens within a year
• Fabric — rub-count and weave, which is what decides whether the arms wear through

Finish

A hand-rubbed polish is applied, cured and buffed in multiple thin coats over days. A sprayed lacquer is one afternoon. The sprayed finish looks better on delivery day and worse in year five, and it cannot be locally repaired — a scratch means refinishing the whole panel.

The cost-per-year test

Divide the price by the years you expect to keep it. A Rs 400,000 solid Sheesham set used for thirty years costs about Rs 13,000 a year. A Rs 120,000 MDF set replaced every six years costs Rs 20,000 a year and leaves nothing behind. The cheaper object is the more expensive decision.
